I have just come back from a week away in Dorset. It’s not often I get away. Not often at all. In fact, the last time my wife and I went away was for two days, about 8 years ago!
My wife and I stayed at a little cottage in Marnhull, kind of between Shaftesbury and Sherborne. It was a lovely little place, newly renovated and really well thought-out. And the best part it is for two people only!
The cottage is owned by Rachel and Pete Orchard. Pete is a builder, and looking at the renovation pictures, the cottage has been completely gutted and refreshed, keeping all of the original cottage features that add to the experience. It is very cosy and has a lovely wood burning stove.
The important details for me, the kitchen. They’ve made good use of the space and I was able to cook decent meals without running out of hobs, grills and sides.
Rachel and Pete popped in to see how we were doing and they were really nice people. I think they have thought of just about everything possible. The only thing I would do is put some non-slip matting under the hearth rug, as when I came bombing round the corner to sit in the Sherlock chair, I nearly went base over apex as the rug slipped on the wooden floor!
The area itself is lovely. It is all windy country roads and farms, so don’t bother valeting your car before you go down there!
There was a little gift basket waiting for us when we arrived. It had some homemade jam and marmalade in plus eggs, milk and a loaf of bread, plus a few other little treats.
The slipper bath was great, albeit real cast iron (read – cold on your back!), and the downstairs shower was nice too. Be careful on the stairs though, you could lose your head if you’re used to Gone with the wind type stairs!
All in all, the cottage is really beautiful, and I would highly recommend staying there. You can really switch off and relax, if that’s your bag. For me, it was a good week to sit in front of cookers and warm fires. Much quality food was prepared and consumed, and now the clothes fit a little less well than before!
During the week we went to Durdle Door/Lulworth Cove, popped in to see my relatives in Rimpton Cemetery (it’s near Sherborne), Sherborne itself, Shaftesbury, Axminster, Lyme Regis, Yeovil and more.
I’ll leave you with a few pictures. The website for the cottage is http://primrosecottagedorset.co.uk/
